BY THE SEA

Since ancient times our relationship to the sea is contradictory. In the premodern world, humans encountered the endless sea in awe and in fear. The ocean, as calm and peaceful it might appear on some days, was experienced as a dangerous environment full of mythical sea creatures and threats. Today, the ocean has long been demystified. Not the ocean is primarily a threat to the human being but the human being is a threat to the ocean. We find beauty in the marine landscape which we gradually destroy.
