TAIPEI SIDEWALK GARDENS

Taipei´s urban fabric is very dense and complex. In the history of this city, several waves of rapid population growth led to the demand for cheap and quickly built housing. As a result, residential areas in the older districts of Taipei are seldom a pleasure for the eyes – grey is the predominant color. But local residents have a great talent to take things into their own hands by improving their immediate surroundings on a micro-level. Tiny sidewalk gardens and street corner plantations are one strategy to add some green to the scenery in order to improve the quality of living environments. As space is limited, the privately cultivated plants expand to the public realm and are much entangled with the city´s architecture and street life.
